Hyundai Sante Fe 'R' Benny

Again Benny and I have had a quiet couple of weeks. We haven’t had time to do anything exciting since my last update so this one is going to be a bit on the tame side.

The daily commute continues and the fuel consumption remains good staying in the high sevens on the freeways and low eights in suburbia. I haven’t tried him out in heavy traffic yet and I have no intention of deliberately putting us in that predicament.

The other day my wife’s car picked up a nail so we loaded the flat tyre into the back and headed down to the tyre shop to have the puncture repaired. While I was there I picked up some rims that they were holding for me and managed to fit four 15in rims and one 17in rim and tyre into the back with ease. The four tie down points located on the floor made securing the wheels a piece of cake so there was no sliding around on the way home.

On another day we went for lunch with my dad and his missus and managed to get four adults and one child in child seat into Benny though with a bit of grumbling from my wife as she was forced to sit in the 3rd row as you can’t put a child seat in the 3rd row. This is the same with all vehicles in this category.

After I got him back I hooked up my phone and waited for an opportunity to test it out. It only took a day for that opportunity to arise.

I found the Bluetooth easy to use as it is a simple system with only three buttons to choose from. There is the multifunction button that is used for answering, hanging up, voice recognition and resetting the system. The other two buttons are for adjusting the volume. The system is hooked up to the stereo and mutes the whole shebang when calling is activated. When I got a call the reception inside the car was good and the person on the other end said I was coming through fine and then all of a sudden they said it was bad and hard to hear me even though I could hear them fine. We traced the problem to the fact that it had started to rain halfway through our conversation. The microphone is mounted on the windscreen and we have put it down to the fact that the mic is sensitive enough that it was picking up the rain drops hitting the windscreen and transmitting them to the person on the other end. This says a lot for the quality of the product but could be a bit of a hindrance.

At the moment Benny is sitting out the front with two more wheels in the back to go and get new tyres fitted. These are a bit more of a squeeze as they are 15in rims with tyres fitted and I can just get the door shut.

Now that the towbar is fitted I can go on the weekend to pick up the play car and find out how well Benny handles a big load. I might even see if I can find time to take my off-road trailer out to the play ground and see how he goes towing off-road.

That’s it for now.

Till next time, safe motoring.
