A world-first for an Aussie-built car - Hybrid Camry takes a class victory in its world motorsport debut at Targa Tasmania.

Toyota's Hybrid Camry has won its first motorsport title anywhere in the world - with an Australian-built car.

Hybrid Camry, in its world motorsport debut, claimed a class victory in this year's Targa Tasmania.

The car took out the hybrid category after completing six gruelling days of competition.

Adding to the sweetness of victory in the red-blooded international motorsport contest, the Hybrid Camry's overall fuel economy was just 8.0 litres per 100km - a remarkable achievement.

The class-winning car covered more than 2000km, including competitive stages where speeds reached more than 180 km/h.

Driven by journalist Peter Whitaker and advertising agency proprietor Keith Blanket, the Hybrid Camry was instantly recognisable on the roads of Tasmania - and not just because of its hybrid badges.

The body's pearlescent white paint was covered in thousands of signatures of Toyota employees involved in building and selling Hybrid Camry in Australia.

Whitaker said the car benefited from its petrol-electric hybrid technology, with energy generated by the brakes and wheels being converted into electricity and stored in the battery for later use.

"The Hybrid Camry handled and performed faultlessly," Whitaker said.

"We could have gone faster on some of the competitive stages, but we were focused on using as little fuel as possible," he said.

Whitaker and Blanket have competed in six previous Targas. Whitaker is also a veteran of three Bathurst 12 Hour races, a Sandown 6 Hour and various production car championships.

First run in 1992, Targa Tasmania incorporates some of the most exciting and challenging tarmac roads in the world.

The Targa result was no surprise for anyone familiar with the Hybrid Camry's potential.

Last year, a US-built version became the first hybrid used as the official pace car for an entire event in the premier NASCAR Cup series.

It passed the ultimate performance test as pace car in six NASCAR Cup events, including the fastest and longest NASCAR race in the United States, a 960 km event in North Carolina.
