The mid-life update of BMW’s market-dominating Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the BMW X5, has arrived in Australia showcasing a range of more powerful yet efficient engines, new driver assistance systems and a set of sporty design enhancements.

BMW Group Australia Managing Director, Stavros Yallouridis said the launch of the new model would reaffirm the BMW X5’s position as the leading luxury SAV in Australia.

“The BMW X5 has long been considered the benchmark of its class and this modelupdate now offers Australian customers an even more attractive value proposition,” said Mr Yallouridis.

“We have given the car the highest standard specification in the segment,” said Mr Yallouridis.

“Combined with its on-road performance, and a range of features that are not offered by our competitors, the BMW X5 looks set to continue its success story in Australia,” he said.

The BMW X5 has been the top-selling luxury SAV in Australia for the last seven consecutive years, and leads the competitive segment by a considerable margin in total worldwide sales.

The mid-life update sees three new nameplates enter the X5 range, the X5 xDrive35i, the X5 xDrive40d and the range-topping X5 xDrive50i. All engine variants offer a substantial increase in power over the models they replace as well as significant improvements in fuel economy.

The revised in-line six cylinder diesel in the BMW X5 xDrive30d represents the ideal combination of power and performance characteristics with the lowest fuel consumption and emissions in its class. Fuel economy improves by 1.3l from 8.7 l/100km to 7.4 l/100km, and the reduction in CO² emissions is an impressive 36 g/km from 231 g/km to 195 g/km. However at the same time, power output has been increased by 7kW to 180kW. Maximum torque is 540Nm, up by 20Nm on the previous model, and is developed from 1,750 to 3,000rpm, thus guaranteeing powerful pull even at low engine speeds.

The all new X5 xDrive40d Sport replaces the X5 xDrive35d and features an allaluminum six cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo technology and Common Rail direct injection. The new X5 xDrive40d Sport represents the ideal combination of power and performance characteristics with extremely low fuel consumption and emissions. Fuel is used more efficiently than ever before, thanks to features such as the state-ofthe-art, high precision common rail injection and the extremely light engine block in a magnesium-aluminium alloy. The power output has been maximised to 225 kW and 600Nm of torque, which is 15 kW and 20 Nm more than its predecessor respectively. The resulting acceleration is a mere 6.6 seconds to 100km/h. The X5 xDrive40d Sport consumes only 7.5 litres per 100kms. Overall, the consumption and emissions have been reduced by 10% in the X5 xDrive40d Sport versus the outgoing X5 xDrive35d.

The BMW X5 xDrive35i replaces the BMW xDrive30i, and is powered by a new straight-six engine with BMW TwinPower turbo featuring direct injection and VALVETRONIC , propelling the X5 xDrive35i from 0-100 km in a mere 6.8 seconds, versus the outgoing X5 xDrive30i covering the sprint in 8.1 seconds. Even with this increased output, the engine consumes just 10.1 litres per 100 km, compared with 11.7 litres for the previous X5 xDrive30i.

At the top of the X5 range sits the X5 xDrive50i Sport featuring the new 300 kW V8 engine, also featuring TwinPower Turbo and High Precision Injection. Superseding the X5 xDrive48i, this V8 receives a power increase of 39 kW and a huge boost in torque, producing 600Nm (up from 475Nm) at 1,750 – 4,500rpm. Accelerating to100 km/hr in 5.5 seconds, the X5 xDrive is more than a full second quicker than its predecessor.

All models feature an eight-speed transmission and speed-dependant Servotronic steering assist system as standard. Active Steering is available as an option on the X5xDrive35i and xDrive50i Sport. Adaptive Drive is also an option available to drivers seeking the ultimate in customizable suspension and handling, offering minimal bodyroll and variable damper control.

Due to almost 80% of all X5 xDrive35d customers opting for either the Sports or M Sport packages, the X5 xDrive40d Sport and X5 xDrive50i Sport now both include the Sports package as standard. The Sports package features sport leather steering wheel, BMW Individual High-Gloss Shadow Line, Anthracite BMW individual roofliner, a titanium-colourer air inlet grille front top and bottom centre as well as two new Y-spoke light alloy wheel options (19” on the X5 xDrive40d Sport and 20” on the X5xDrive50i Sport).

The BMW X5 xDrive50i Sport also has self-levelling rear suspension as standard, while the X5 xDrive40d Sport comes with sports suspension as standard, which can be removed as an non-cost option.

The options packages on offer now extend to an Executive package on the X5 xDrive30d, including a Rear View Camera with Top View, Exterior mirrors containing anti-dazzle functionality, electrical seat adjustment with memory function and Navigation System Professional.

The Innovations package is also now available on all X5 models. This package is loaded with BMW innovations such as Head-Up Display and Automatic Tailgate function. The X5 xDrive50i Sport Innovations Package additionally includes an alarm system and metallic paint.

The subtle design revisions on the new BMW X5 reflect an increased focus on athletic presence to match the road-orientation and dynamic performance of the vehicle. The updated front apron with larger side air intakes and an increased number of surfaces painted in matching body colour present an impressive stance, with repositioned fog lamps reflecting the triangular BMW focus so typical of BMW X models.

The matt-finished silver underride protection stretches across the entire width of the middle air intake, presenting a wide, muscular appearance which is strengthened by the rear apron, L-shaped redesigned taillights with illuminated LED light banks and parallel horizontal crease lines.

Bi-Xenon headlights with LED corona rings are distinctively BMW, functioning as daytime driving lights for added visibility and safety, and are standard on the X5
xDrive50i Sport.

The driver assistance systems on the new BMW X5 now include active Cruise Control with Stop & GO function, Lane Departure Warning, and Side View. Additionally, Headup Display and reversing camera with Top View are unique to BMW in this segment, ensuring the new BMW X5 provides the driver with the ultimate combination of comfort options, infotainment functions and overall safety.
